UPDATE: After following all the information in the book, my website is built! However, that's where I leave the book behind. Some of the plugins recommended are way out of date now, so I'm doing some research on which new ones are the best. So, all in all, the book is a good starting point for your website, but once the groundwork is done, move on to something more up to date.
Make Money Online: Roadmap of a Dot Com Mogul doesn’t hit bookstores until May 1 but retailers have been swamped trying to keep up with the demand. Jeff Bezos, founder and CEO of Amazon.com said, “Never before have we seen this level of interest for such a niche product. MyLot – When you visit their site, you will see it’s pretty simple. You need to register and start chatting! The posts on the site will remind you a little bit on Twitter, but it’s not the same. Wow. I have followed your blogging from the start Matthew, you have done some epic posts over this time but this one is just immense. It is the most comprehensive list I have seen although the term ‘list’ does not do it justice. I am still checking out some of the resources you added and will probably still be going through them at Christmas . Great job mate.
Now next, you’ll want to pick a WordPress theme from somewhere like ThemeForest, Elegant Themes or OptimizePress. This is the barebones design of your site, which you can then customize with your own branding, copy, and images. That being said, you don’t want to cheap out. It costs less than $100 to buy a theme that will make your website look professional (and you can upgrade to a completely custom design once you get the business going).
Not only that, you will be able to evaluate business ideas much more intelligently once you’ve gone through this whole process. You will understand the fundamentals of keyword research & analysis, traffic & lead generation, social & affiliate marketing, monetization & conversion testing, and traffic analysis. These skills will help you immensely in ANY business you ever decide to start (online or not, passive or not).
Once you’ve gathered a list, put together a template outreach email (as you’ll be doing this over and over) that’s short and clear with expectations. Tell your potential interviewee who you are, what your podcast is about, and what you’re asking of them. Do a few test interviews with friends and family to make sure everything is being recorded at the quality you want and then book your first episode.
While the “get paid to chat” jobs often serve students from Asia, Cambly seems to draw from an even wider geographical base. In addition to Asia, it has students from South America, Saudi Arabia, India, Turkey, South Korea and others. It seems like a good way to get paid to share your language and culture while learning a lot about other cultures too.
You see, what the big publishing houses do with big offices of editors, writers, administrative staff… and then big printing presses… then distribution centers to get their books out to bookstores around the country… all to hopefully get books in the hands of customers… you can do on the computer you have right now. If that’s not massive disruption, I don’t know what is.
