I haven’t done so well with Smashwords, but I suspect it’s partly a matter of chance. I base this speculation on the fact that some of my ebooks do better on Nook and others on Kindle, even when I don’t promote them at all, so any particular ebook must get better or worse placement in the search results for each platform for reasons that won’t always be decipherable.
Contrary to authors’ fantasies, books don’t sell themselves. It is true that ebooks are easier to get in front of potential buyers than print books, but I consider myself lucky to have made decent money and to still have Kindle income every month (even if it was only $104 last month). To really hit it big, you need to learn about marketing, which is beyond the scope of this article (and mostly beyond my skills, which explains the $104). Fortunately, there is a lot of good information about marketing Kindle books online.
It doesn’t pay much, but if you’re a healthy person and want to make a bit of extra money online, the AchieveMint app will reward you for doing things like walking, tracking your food, or taking health surveys. AchieveMint works by connecting to fitness apps you might already be using like Fitbit, RunKeeper, Healthkit, and MyFitnessPal and then giving you points for certain actions. For every 10,000 points, you earn $10 with no limit on your earnings.
Now, it’s time to plan out your show. If you’re doing an interview-style show, you’ll now want to start getting some guests involved. You can use your existing social network to reach out to people you already know or are connected with on Twitter or Facebook. You can also head to Medium or Amazon to find authors or experts on topics specific to your niche.

Another great example of this is Jeff Kavanaugh’s book, Consulting Essentials. Jeff is a partner at Infosys, a large consulting firm, and an Adjunct Professor at the University of Texas, Dallas. He wrote this book to help his students understand what consultants did and how to do it, and it’s had the unintended consequence of attracting hundreds of very qualified applicants to his firm.
But I will temper that opinion, by saying getting your name in print can be great for achieving expert status for use in later ebooks/membership site promotions (your really money spinner), and for gaining new fans that your own distribution efforts can’t get. For example, Ferriss pulled this off pretty well, using a book to drastically grow his online following / blog readership.
Take surveys, answer questions and product testing are other ways that you can make money from chatting online.
